Terms of service

Last updated 23 May 2026. Effective immediately.

Free-Food Finder ("the service") is a personal, non-commercial project run by Jonas Rackl. By using the web app at freefoodfinder.app or the iOS app, you agree to these terms.

1. Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old and a current student, faculty member, staff member, or affiliate of a university supported by Free-Food Finder. Eligibility is verified by your university email domain.

2. Acceptable use

  • Use the service for its intended purpose: finding free food at your campus.
  • Do not impersonate other users or universities.
  • Do not post fake alerts, spam, or any content that's harassing, hateful, or illegal.
  • Do not attempt to scrape, redistribute, or republish alert content. Each alert is the property of its original poster on the university mailing list.
  • Do not attempt to access another user's account or data.

3. Dietary tags are a best effort, not a guarantee

Read this carefully if you have a severe allergy or strict religious diet. Free-Food Finder uses an automated parser to extract dietary tags from email text. The parser can be wrong. A "nut-free" tag does NOT guarantee the food is free of nuts. A "kosher" tag does NOT guarantee the food meets your specific standard of kashrut.

Always verify with the original poster or by inspecting the food yourself before eating, especially if a parser mistake would harm you. Free-Food Finder is not liable for any allergic reaction, religious violation, or other harm caused by reliance on a tag.

4. Service availability

The service is provided "as is" and "as available." There is no uptime guarantee. Alerts may be delayed, missing, or duplicated. The service may be paused or discontinued at any time without notice.

5. Your content

When you forward an email to alerts@freefoodfinder.app, you grant us permission to parse and store the contents for the purpose of operating the service. You retain ownership of the original content. If the email was authored by someone else (e.g., a typical mailing-list post), that person retains their authorship.

6. Account termination

You can delete your account at any time from inside the app (Settings → Delete my account). We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or that we reasonably believe to be fraudulent.

7. No warranty, no liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. JONAS RACKL AND ANY ASSOCIATED CONTRIBUTORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

Total liability for any direct damages will not exceed five U.S. dollars (USD 5).

8. Not affiliated with any university

Free-Food Finder is an independent project. It is not endorsed by, sponsored by, or affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or any other university whose mailing lists it ingests. University names are used solely for descriptive purposes.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

10. Changes to these terms

If we change anything material, we will email everyone with an account at least 14 days before the change takes effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
